Environmentalism: The Religion for an Eco-theocratic Superstate?

by Phillip D. Collins ©, Apr. 11, 2007

In a recent address to the CATO Institute in Washington, D.C., Czech President Vaclav Klaus declared, “Environmentalism is a religion. It does not belong in the natural sciences and is more connected with social science” (Mooney, no pagination). According to Klaus, this religion is purely a statist one designed to enthrone policy professionals that hope to “rule from above” (no pagination). Klaus asserted that this religion worked in tandem with “multi-culturalism,” “internationalism,” “social democratism,” and other fashionable ideologies to accelerate the global tectonic shift towards “supranationalism” (no pagination). These contentions seem to be reinforced by the admonitions of one of the environmentalist movement’s leading ideologues: Albert Gore.

A cursory perusal of Gore’s Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit reveals the religious character of environmentalism. Replete with inherently religious terms like “heretical,” “moral,” and “spirit,” Gore’s book virtually qualifies as a sacred text. However, the religion that Gore espouses is hardly amicable to Christianity. Gore assails Christianity for the purported suppression of the “goddess religion,” which he contends provided humanity with a “spiritual sense of our place in nature” (260). According to Gore, those who think otherwise hold “heretical” beliefs (258).

Robert Zubrin on Radical Environmentalists and Misanthropes

‘In his latest book, Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism, Zubrin documents the history of dystopian environmentalism, from economic impairment inflicted by current global warming policies to the Malthusian concern over population growth. “Just think how much poorer we would be today if the world would have had half as many people in the 19th century as it actually did. You can get rid of Thomas Edison or Louis Pasteur, take your pick.’

The Facade of “Global Salvationism”

According to Mr. Henderson, the great psycho-wave of the past 35 years is “global salvationism.” This quasi-religious belief has two ill-fitting articles of faith: environmental alarmism, and the assertion that Third World poverty is in some way due to the West taking more than its fair share of global resources. Both problems are alleged to require top-down global political solutions, including giant corporations accepting more “social responsibility.”

The focus of this global master-plan is the bland but subversive notion of “sustainable development,” that without extensive UN-administered government controls the world is going to Hades in a handbasket …

– Peter Foster, “The Prince of Power [Maurice Strong],Financial Post (May 19, 2005)

I can’t think of a better way to put Climategate into proper perspective than to revisit a 1998 Financial Post editorial titled “Global Warming: The Real Agenda.” Its author, Terence Corcoran, quoted from statements given to the Calgary Herald by the former Environment Minister, Christine Stewart.

As “minister of the environment, I am very worried about global warming,” Stewart said, “no matter if the science is phony, there are collateral environmental benefits.”

Green Machinations and Commissar Vanishings

Originally Published at Conspiracy Archive on 2009/01/10

commissarPaul Joseph Watson wrote a story yesterday about the discovery that Carol Browner, Obama’s Energy Czar, is involved with Socialist International.

Browner, reports The Baltimore Examiner, “is a member of the Commission for a Sustainable World Society (CSWS), which is a formal organ of the Socialist International. Oddly enough, the group’s web site was recently scrubbed to remove Browner’s picture and biography, but her name is still listed next to the photo-biographies of her 14 colleagues on the commission. The Socialist International is no group of woolly-headed idealists. It is an influential assembly of officials from across the international community whose official Statement of Principles describes an agenda of gaining and exercising government power based on socialist concepts.”

Here’s the relevant (socialistinternational.org) webpage as it looks now; and here, as it looked only a few days ago.

The Heritage Foundation blogged about it on Jan. 7th. They compared the Browner scrubbing to similar “Commissar Vanishings” by Stalin in Communist Russia.
