Totalitarian nutjobs come in all stripes. Too often, however, - and shamefully - religion (or God) is the pretext. During their reign of terror the Jacobins utilized an ingenious device to justify mass murder, namely an obscure term in the law books called Hostis humani generis (’enemy of the human race’). It was originally used as an excuse for tyrannicide and the killing of pirates on sight, but during the French Revolution the scope was expanded to include anyone perceived as a threat against “natural law” - that is, the law according Robespierre and his Cult of the Supreme Being.
