Russian mafia take over as world’s top crime gang

THEY trade in everything from stolen art to nuclear technology and leave rivals riddled with bullets in the streets of Moscow.
Now the worst thugs in the Russian Mafia have blasted their way to the top of the global organised crime league.
Moscow’s Solntsevskaya Bratva, known as the Brotherhood, have just been named the worst criminal gang in the world in a major survey.
And the planet’s most famous mobsters, the “Five Families” of the New York Mafia, barely scrape into the top 10.
The Brotherhood took over the underworld of south-west Moscow in the 1980s after godfather Sergei Mikhailov learned his criminal trade in the Siberian labour camps.
Then, by linking up with other gangs, they built an empire worth tens of billions of pounds across Russia and beyond.
The survey says: “From its base in Moscow, this syndicate runs rackets in extortion, drug trafficking, car theft, stolen art, money laundering, contract killings, arms dealing, trading nuclear material, prostitution and oil deals.”
Anyone who threatens the Brotherhood’s business tends to end up dead.
They murdered a string of rival hoods in Moscow in the early 1990s and a bid to put Mikhailov on trial in Switzerland in 1996 had to be abandoned after several witnesses were shot or blown up.
Former FBI agent Bob Levinson says the Russian Mafia are “the most dangerous people on earth”.
But the survey, compiled by online men’s mag askmen.com, reveals that they have rivals in every corner of the world.
No 2 in the gangland top 10 are the Yamaguchi-gumi syndicate, the biggest of Japan’s Yakuza crime clans.
Based in the city of Kobe and run by mastermind Shinobu Tsusaka, the 40,000- strong Yamaguchi-gumi run extortion, gambling, vice, drugs and loan-sharking scams. They also take kickbacks from building projects and peddle online porn.
Third place in the poll goes to an Italian Mafia gang - but not the Sicilian Cosa Nostra or the Camorra of Naples.
The little-known “‘Ndrangheta”, based in the southern district of Calabria, have ties to Colombian drug barons.
Some believe they are responsible for 80 per cent of Europe’s cocaine trade.
While other Mafia gangs have been crippled by informers, the ‘Ndrangheta have kept their vows of silence because the mob is built on close family ties.
Most gangs only care about cash. But the fourth mob on the list, India’s D Company, have sinister ties to Islamic terror. Boss of bosses Dawood Ibrahim masterminded a wave of bombings that killed 257 people in Mumbai in 1993.
Ibrahim has links to al-Qaeda and the Taliban and is widely believed to be hiding in Pakistan. He is rumoured to have had plastic surgery to alter his face.
Fifth on the list are the ruthless 14K triad from Hong Kong, who trade in human beings as well as drugs and assassinations.
The Sicilian Mafia only make sixth place in the poll after a string of high-profile arrests of their bosses.
Seventh are the Chinese Dai Huen Jai gang, many of whom are veterans of Chairman Mao’s Red Guards.
One of the world’s most violent mobs, theMexican Tijuana Cartel, take eighth place. Turf wars between the Cartel, led by Eduardo Arellano-Felix, and other gangs have killed hundreds in recent years.
Ninth spot goes to Taiwan’s United Bamboo triad.
And despite their Hollywood reputation, the five New York Mafia families are left bringing up the rear.
The Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese clans have been relentlessly harried by the FBI.
Many bosses are now behind bars, including Gambino godfather Nicholas Corozzo, who was held in March.

Russians are powerful but also the Serbian mafia is very big in Europe and moving major product of drugs and weapons in Europe and Asia and the world.and the Italians well they are not as powerful as they once were but eastern European gangs are probably the biggest they have nothing to lose since the collapses and wars int those regions .

Alfonso you have no idea what you’re talking about with all respects… The Mafia in America is not what it once was. But if you do your research you’ll find that the Camorra (Napoli) and the N’Drangheta (Calabria) are both much stronger than the Sicilian mafia and all 5 families in New York are… Camorra and N’Drangheta have taken over almost completley. With my research i see the N’Drangheta and the Russian mafia as the top in the world today

I think this is all a fonny lie if u guys have been paying attention to the news the Mexican cartels have been at the top of the ranks of being the most notourios modern mobs like the cartel of Sinaloa,la familia michoacana,Los zetas,the juarez cartel and more.there known to take the columbians bussines after the death of Pablo escobar but a lot of the columbians are just allies with the Mexican cartels and or work for them,do your reasearch and get your facts straight..

Man this article is way out-dated!! Since it was posted in 2008 it’s easy to see why these fools have no idea what they’re talking about. The Mexican mob is now at the top for world organized crime. They control everything from drug trafficing to human smuggling. They have replaced Colombia in world drug distribution. I saw a story on CNN just a few weeks ago about how the Mexicans have been tracked off the coast of eastern Africa making weapons and drug drop offs to that part of the region. They’ve also been said to be spotted in south eastern Europe. How many of them other world mobs do you hear about being on the western hemisphere doing there thing?? YOU DONT!! they dont have the balls like the Mexicans do. They pretty much stick around in their part of the world. It’s not like I’m rooting for them but dang it them Mexicans are cazy man! They will stop at nothing to protect their business. Further more… the Mexican mob has done something else that no other crime syndicate has ever done before. A king pin from the Sinaloa cartel by the name of “El Chapo Guzman” has made it into the ranks and pages of “FORBES MAGIZINE” under the worlds richest men. If that dont prove anything nothing will…

El Chapo Guzman is second on the worlds ten most wanted, he’s also on the list for worlds 67 most powerful people in the world ranking somewhere in between. Escaping maximum security prisons and wanted by the Interpol. The Sinaloan cartel is on top no doubt.

I recently went on a holiday to Prague,Italy, Germany and Amsterdam and every where I went I kept hearing these sort of ghost tales of a Maltese gang/mafia. In Italy they were called the 3 wise/old men. It was strange because I was told these stories only a couple of times in completely different places. I have only found little information on it and one of the articles I saw has been deleted. The most Interesting was Russians being caught selling submarines to the Maltese for African drug and diamond smuggling. Can anyone please post any info they have as it intrigues me and I am trying to gather information. From the way the locals would describe they insisted they where wealthy and dangerous beyond belief. I don’t think that it is possible in this day and age that some thing like this really could be kept secret.

this is just some blog that this dude wrote. the biggest drug-trafficking in europe is controlled by the albanian crime syndicates how can you people not see that. although they are not very big in size, they have a very cold heart towards killing and never hesitate to use their power. they even went in sicily and took over the prostitution rackets that the sicilians had. replacing La Cosa Nostra in its rank, size, power and figure in organized crime, the Albanian Mafia holds itself as a domineering force in the mafia underworld.

This Maltese mafia is something my business partner became obsessed with. South American cartel able to speak fluent Maltese, morrocan hash smuggler too and a top Bulgarian woman trafficker. All arrested seprate parts of the world at seperate times. Also in the 1950 a rumor that Freemasons had set up a special sect in malta to infiltrate top crime organizations of Italy. @ DK , in a international report, it was shown that the MEXICAN Cartels have indeed surpassed many International criminal organizations, now only surpassed by the Russian Mafia and the Chinese Criminal organizations(all put together), the difference between these 3 is that when it comes to pure brutality the Mexican Cartels make the other two look soft, the Mexican Cartels are known to kidnap their enemies(including police, politicians, soldiers, their family members) torture them to death, chop them to pieces, and then drop them off, most of the time times more than 3, 4 bodies at the time, and in many cases over 10 bodies with severed, arms, feet, legs, hands… you get the point this are dropped off in city downtowns, some peal the faces and leave them in city downtowns as well with messages with a written threat towards any opposition, it happens all the time, up to 10 murders in some cities EVERYDAY, when it comes to brutality the Mexican Cartels take it.

What I think is that the mexican mafia will be on top once they form an alliance with in all the cartels. They also currently own 75% of mexico government. system. The crime families of America are not as strong and the Russian Mafia is not the best with drugs in my opinion, but the are the best with trafficking fire arms do to russia’s production and the corruption of the russian military. The Mexican Cartels are strong in Mexico, but in the U.S. they don’t do so well. I can’t wait for the Navy Seals to kill all of the cartels like what they did with the Median Cartel in Columbia XD. To be the most powerful mafia you have to control &/or have a strong presence in the major countries ie Germany, China, Japan, UK, USA.The chinese mafia are very strong & active in all these major countries, plus in their own country - China, their government has some off the toughest & hardest laws’s against organised crime anywhere in the world, the death penalty given to gangleaders/godfathers is common.Countries like Jamican & Mexico are only lawless as their governments/police are weak & fail to crack down on the massacres.Murder rate off a country does not indicate a countrie’s mafia power, if this was the case then South Africa would be top & Japan’s Crime syndicates would be no more than a average street gang.

The Italian mafia is probably the most weakest & most understrength off all the mafia’s mentioned, they are no longer the force they once were.They have been overtaken in their very own country in certain parts by the chinese triad (mafia).It is mainly the russian’s that are keeping the term “Mafia” alive.I totally agree the Italian mafia were at one stage a major criminal force internationally, this was during the 60’s-70’s, the real (newage) mafia’s in terms of global domination are certainly the russia’s & chinese.The chinese are the most widespread off all the crime groups, as their communities can be found right across the world.

Man, you guys must be crazy or something. Everybody knows that the Ill’fludicllumia, the Icelandic mafia, are the scariest dudes to have come out of the extreme North Atlantic. They trade in everything from undersized pilchards to illegal ice smuggling. There were massive gangwars during the late 1890’s which left one person severely injured. Many of them have been accused of rigging spring water prices. Very few people have even heard of them because they are so clever and a bit shy.

The Mexican drug cartel are about drugs there reach dose not go outside of U.S. or South, Central America. The cartels even with there blood shed will never have pull or say in Europe or even some U.S. cities with out the Russian go head.

Let’s be careful when referring to the “italian mafia”. Are we talking about the italian-american cosa nostra or the italian ndrangheta? Major major difference. The italian american cosa nostra has been weakened considerably. While the italian ndrangheta has gained strength immensely since the 70s during their brutal kidnapping campaign of the 80s. Now They control 80% of cocaine entering Europe. Read it yourself, it’s stated everywhere. They are present in europe, australia, canada, argentina, and parts of the middle east. One article said, the ndrangheta’s biggest problem these days: “where to invest all the money”. A group within the ndrangheta called “la santa” which consists of the “elite” sons and daughters of ndrangheta bosses sent to prestigious universities for the purpose of infiltrating politics.

Another interesting characteristic of the ndrangheta, is that they’ve only had 42 informants in their entire existence. That’s pretty remarkable considering they were founded in 1861. Only 42 informants compared to thousands and thousands of cosa nostra informants and turncoats. This is due to close-knit family ties bound by blood and marriage. Much like the albanian mafia. As a matter of fact, the only mafia in the world they compared the ndrangheta to, was the albanian mafia in terms of close knit family ties.

Why such a debate, are not all
Mafias, gangs, cartels dangerous and threatening to
Society? Each outfit controls a part of the world
And work together to control all of the underworld crime that keeps
them in power. Even the Goverments. This world
Will never know peace. Women are traded like cattle, children as well.
they are all in their own right of violence and obstruction against humanity, powerful.
There is no argument as to who is the most violent because they all are.
People all over these parts of the world are being slaughtered and victimised so that someone else can profit from the benifets and resources. so what’s the point in arguing who is the most powerful or richest or strongest. what about the religious fanatics who are blowing people up. Or the Goverments who supposedly control the world but seem to have no real control over any of these crime outfits?

Only the ‘Ndrangheta earns 44 billion (official figures go on wikipedia) how you compare to other than Italian? naples else is the largest center for selling drugs in europe .. certainly the Mexican cartel, the triads and Russian mafia are more violent or at least more visible in America … 44 billion useful as Microsoft and apple put together, do the math … i am European ..

The Mexican cartels are very powerful no doubt! but the facts are most of this power and killing rates are in their own country.They do operate out of Mexico,in many countries however,its just to set up a big cocaine deals and once thats done there out,they dont have the strength or the man power to start gang warfare and recruit members for other crimes outside of the Mexico area.If you want to talk about organizations that are widespread,violent and powerful throughout the world,as well as being involved in every type of organized crime i.e credit card forgery,scams , arms movement, drugs,tax evasion and counterfeiting its the Chinese triads

I believe the Triads based in HongKong/China etc are the biggest,making them the most powerful as well.This is mainly due to their extent of illegal activities and the Chinese population being the most spread out
and developed communities in the world.To give an example or view of China population the Chinese communist party or CCP, is over 80 million strong in members

Food for thought. Does crime and politics go hand in hand?? The politicians are the true mafia of today. They should list them as the most powerfull. The US used the mob to take care of their dirty business then they dispose of them. The US are the leaders in organised crime. Its so organised that it seems legal. But history and facts speak for itself.

I have read many books about organised crime with many different countries and Mafias covered and nearly every country has its local organised criminals involved in the illegal trade.However I have found that the Chinese criminal groups are certainly the most secretive and powerful covering the most countries every single country in South east Asia Thailand, Phillipines, Macau, Vietnam, Taiwn, Burma, Laos, Tibet, Japan, China, HongKong, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Cambodia, Brunei, Nepal, all these countries the Triad groups and ethnic Chinese criminal gangs(non Triad) are heavily involved in major crimes and has control of the illegal criminal trade- drugs production,counterfeiting production and arms and ammo production
