Either they grew it for fiber or they grew it to smoke. I doubt they did both. Further, smoking pot, hash and oil, was only common in India and the mid east back then, mainly as a sort of sacrament. All that they knew about marijuana in the west was the long tradition of hemp production. Perhaps they used hemp oil extract for medicinal uses, but I can't say for sure.
