Over the years I knew him he confided little "secrets" including a deep interest and identification with Sabbatai Zvi, the false messiah whose movement peaked in 1666, the year he was captured by the Turks and converted to Islam. Cohen and Zvi are amazingly similar, in terms of their psychology and behaviour. Ca. 1990 Cohen told me there was a "plan" to exterminate most of the world's gentiles, in a second holocaust to avenge the deaths of Jews in the Second World War. In many ways, he adopts the style and tactics of a cult leader in the way he deals with friends and followers. He is a dogmatic Zionist and supporter of Israel, and claims to have spent time with Ariel Sharon during the 1974 Arab-Israeli war. Cohen's fans take him for a gentle, elder "flower child" -- highly ironic, considering his politics tend to be extremely right wing.
