Hegel Denies Evolution (But Dies 28 Years before the Origin of Species)

Monday, March 16th, 2009 - by Terry Melanson

Alfred Russel - 3 March 2009

Our friends over at www.Marxists.org are perplexed about Hegel’s views on evolution. I am not quite sure where Hegel sits in the Communist Pantheon, but apparently he has some degree of importance. In 1816 Hegel published his Philosophy of Nature (Part 3 of his Encyclopaedia of Philosophical Sciences). Steven Houlgate has written on this book and has posted his critique at Marxists.org. Hegel states the following:

“it is a completely empty thought to represent species as developing successively, one after the other, in time…. The land animal did not develop naturally out of the aquatic animal, nor did it fly into the air on leaving the water.”

Is Richard Dawkins still evolving?

Saturday, November 8th, 2008 - by Terry Melanson

Melanie Phillips - 23rd October 2008

On Tuesday evening I attended the debate between Richard Dawkins and John Lennox at Oxford’s Natural History Museum. This was the second public encounter between the two men, but it turned out to be very different from the first. Lennox is the Oxford mathematics professor whose book, God’s Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? is to my mind an excoriating demolition of Dawkins’s overreach from biology into religion as expressed in his book The God Delusion — all the more devastating because Lennox attacks him on the basis of science itself. In the first debate, which can be seen on video on this website, Dawkins was badly caught off-balance by Lennox’s argument precisely because, possibly for the first time, he was being challenged on his own chosen scientific ground.

Taking on Darwin in Turkey

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 - by Terry Melanson

Daniel Steinvorth - 09/23/2008

Fundamentalist Christians in America are not the only ones leading a crusade against Darwin. Creationism and “intelligent design” are becoming increasingly popular among Turkey’s Muslims, too.

The man who wants to save the world goes by the name of Harun Yahya and resembles an actor from the age of silent films. He wears a white silk suit, gold cufflinks and has a finely trimmed beard on his chin. “In 20 years,” he says in serious tone, “humanity will enter a golden age.”

Yahya says that he discovered these joyful tidings in the Bible and the Koran. He maintains that it is a “scientific fact” that Jesus and Mahdi, the Muslim messiah, will return to mankind to solve all global conflicts. Beforehand, however, he says that these two heavenly emissaries will have to tackle another challenge: They must eradicate the heresy of British naturalist Charles Darwin, who postulated that all life arose from a process of natural selection.
